Local Women’s Organization to Host Public Reception for Traveling Exhibit
The traveling exhibition was curated by Camille Ann Brewer, a member of The Pierians and founding curator of the Mott-Warsh Collection. Brewer will provide a brief talk to the audience about the exhibition. “Selections from the Toussaint L’Overture Series” is a part of an initiative to place selections from the Mott-Warsh Collection in various churches throughout Genesee County. “We are excited to begin this facet of our art lending program with the Flint area churches. This has been a goal since the inception of the collection,” states Brewer. “We encourage the community to come out and enjoy light refreshments with us while viewing the breath-taking work of Jacob Lawrence,” notes LaNesha DeBardelaben, president of the local chapter of The Pierians. Any church in Genesee County may contact the Mott-Warsh Collection to schedule the traveling exhibition for their church. The Mott-Warsh Collection is a private collection of fine art created by artists of the African-Diaspora. The Mott-Warsh Collection lends collection items to Flint based cultural institutions, nationally touring museum and college exhibitions. Maryanne Mott and her husband, the late Herman Warsh, as a means of providing fine visual art to a broader audience in the City of Flint and beyond, initiated the Mott-Warsh Collection in 2001. With a focus on art produced since 1940, the Mott-Warsh Collection contains work by over 125 artists covering a range of media from drawing to painting, prints to photography and mixed media to sculpture. The Flint, MI Chapter of The Pierians, Incorporated is pleased to sponsor the opening reception for this new traveling exhibition. The Pierians, Incorporated, founded in 1958 in Baltimore, Maryland by Annette C. Johnson, is devoted to the purpose of promoting and encouraging the study and enjoyment of the fine arts, and has supported numerous emerging artists in various fields—including dance, music, theater, and art. The Flint, Michigan Chapter of The Pierians was established in 1990, and has awarded art scholarships, recognized talented local artists, sponsored exhibitions, and hosted student participation in arts-related activities.
