The Pierians honor and celebrate the talented women who provided the beauty and grace that enriched our lives. We highlight events and achievents of their lives and are grateful for such talent who inspired us.

Jessye Norman [1945 - 2019]
Opera Singer

Jessye Norman was a heralded American soprano opera singer who won four Grammy Awards and the National Medal of Arts. She performed the work of many composers throughout her career -- including Schubert, Mahler, Wagner, Brahms, Satie and others -- and by the 1980s was widely recognised as one of the leading sopranos in the world.

"My parents told me that I started singing at the same time that I started speaking. I have absolutely no memory of not singing. And it was and remains a very natural thing for me to do".
